Magnetic License Plate Mount
for plastic license plates
We recommend entrusting the installation of FRAMEOFF license plate mount to professionals. You will find qualified specialists on the "Partners" page.
I. Safety Notes
Read these important safety notes before using the product. Pay attention to the warnings and hazard notes to prevent injury to yourself or others or damage to property.

The magnets, the cleaning wipes and the primer pen must not get into the hands of children. Swallowing FRAMEOFF magnets or chemicals can lead to life-threatening complications. Consult a doctor immediately if there is any suspicion that one of the products have been swallowed!

Keep at least 20 cm/8” distance to pacemakers or implanted defibrillators! Strong magnets can impair the function of these devices.

Keep at least 10 cm/4” distance to electronic devices, data carriers, cards with magnetic strips (e.g. credit cards, key cards), watches (also mechanical), etc.! Strong magnets can affect these devices/objects and permanently impair their functions.

Do not take the product on an airplane or into a hospital. If the product has to be transported by air, a declaration of shipment must be prepared in advance by an authorized testing facility to confirm that the magnetic field is within the safe range. Otherwise you could be fined.

Handle FRAMEOFF magnets with care! It could easily happen that the magnets attract each other unintentionally. This can pinch skin or other parts of the body and cause injury and it is also possible that the magnets get damaged.

Do not drop the magnets or expose them to strong shocks. The magnets are made of brittle material and may break or splinter on impact.

Do not place the product in or near heaters, microwave ovens, cooking equipment or other heat sources. The magnets are heat resistant up to 110 °C/230 °F, which is above the temperature reached by sunlight on black auto body parts. If the magnets are heated to more than 110 °C/230 °F, they are demagnetized, i.e. the magnetic attraction is permanently reduced or completely eliminated. The original properties do not return when the magnets are subsequently cooled down.

Do not dispose of used magnets in large quantities in household refuse, but take them to the scrap metal collection point. The magnets contain valuable materials and can be recycled.

Do not do the installation in the coldness! A temperature of at least 20° C/68 °F is required for the adhesive bonds!

1. Remove the bumper
In the first step, the mounting location must be made accessible for the Contra-Magnets. In most cases, they are mounted on the front or rear bumpers. This is easiest if the vehicle can be raised on a car lift. In case of doubt, delegate the installation to a specialist.

Make the installation area in the bumper accessible from behind: Remove filling material etc.

If you are installing the plate on aluminium trunk lid or other non-magnetic vehicle part: Make area accessible from inside, remove panels etc.
2. Define installation point

Check if the back of the bumper at the intended mounting point of the license plate offers enough space for the magnets and how thick the material of the bumper is at this spot. The Contra-Magnets must not be mounted on steel parts.

A point must be selected where the wall thickness is as small as possible. Normal is 2-3 mm, maximum possible is 8 mm. Above 8 mm the attraction becomes so weak that installation is no more recommended. In addition, the surface of the material has to be smooth and must not be rough or brittle.

Install the magnets with a distance to electronic components and electrical cables. No malfunctions or defects are known so far, but disturbances caused by the magnetic field would be possible.

Take a look to the license plate and check where the Contra-Magnets will be behind the bumper, if the Softcoat-Magnets are attached to the license plate at a point with a straight contact surface. All magnets on the license plate must lie flat and must not be over a rivet. Use the insights you have gained to define the final installation spots for the Softcoat-Magnets on the license plate.

A distance of 5 cm between the individual magnets is recommended to guarantee a long-lasting adhesive bond.
3. Attaching the Softcoat-Magnets

In case of dirt, first clean the back of the license plate, preferably with a wet microfiber cloth.

With one of the cleaning wipes supplied you can now clean the back of the license plate at the spots where the magnets are to be attached. Wait until the license plate is dry again.

If you have a FRAMEOFF-Set for 2 license plates, now prepare the other plate too, before you use the primer pen.

Now take the primer pen and press it at the black dot so that it is activated and the primer flows to the tip. The dot is marked "Crush at dot". If the tip is not sufficiently soaked, you can bring further liquid to the front by gently pressing on the back half of the pen.

Apply the primer on the back of the license plate (or of both license plates) at every place where a magnet is to be mounted. Make sure that a sufficient layer is applied, but not so much that it runs over the license plate.

Now wait until the primer has dried. This takes a maximum of 5 minutes.

Only apply the primer once and never a second time in the same place!

Take one Softcoat-Magnet at a time. You can recognise the Softcoat-Magnets by their softer surface and the FRAMEOFF.CH logo.

Slowly remove the red film and place the magnet with the now exposed adhesive side on the desired location on the number plate. Press the magnet firmly by hand with a weight of about 7 kg.
4. Attaching the Contra-Magnets

Clean the back of the bumper, preferably with a wet microfibre cloth, then dry it off.

Use one of the cleaning wipes provided to clean the areas where the magnets are to be attached. For the adhesive bond to hold, the vehicle part must have a smooth surface, be clean and free of residue. Sanding is not necessary.

To define the position exactly, you can now carefully take the Contra-Magnets one by one and, without removing the red film, hold them against the bumper from the inside while placing the license plate from the outside at the desired position.

Now you can still move the license plate and set the desired position. If you like, you can fix the license plate with masking tape as soon as the right position is chosen.

Take one of the Contra-Magnets at a time, pull off the red film and put it back onto the bumper. The magnetism will pull it into place. Press it down strongly by hand with a weight of approx. 7 kg.
5. Completion

Mount the bumper back on the vehicle.

Ensure that the Contra-Magnets have sufficient space and do not press against other hard vehicle parts.

At room temperature (20 °C/68 °F) it takes 1 hour for the adhesive bond to reach approx. 85% of its final adhesive strength. Please do not use the system before or pull on the magnets, especially not on the Softcoat-Magnets on the license plate! Heat accelerates the process (at 65 °C/149 °F) it is only 10 minutes waiting time), but do not heat the product unnecessarily above 65 °C/149 °F.
CAUTION: The adhesive bond does not achieve the desired adhesion below 20 °C/68 °F. Never install the product at a temperature below 20 °C/68 °F.
All Softcoat-Magnets must lie flat and without tension on the vehicle. If individual magnets do not lie on the vehicle, not flat or only under tension, the magnets will be loaded differently and the adhesive bond may be damaged!

IV. Installation of plastic plate on body part made of Steel

1. Define installation point

Check whether the vehicle part is actually magnetic at the intended installation location. For this test you can use a single Softcoat-Magnet.

Define exactly where the magnets should be placed. Take into account any unevenness on the vehicle part and the rivets on the plastic license plate. Select the position of the magnets so that they can be attached to the license plate on a straight surface, while they will also rest completely on a straight surface on the vehicle.
